Blue herons live in trees and sometimes just rest on branches like this bird. They’re popular in Cuyahoga Valley National Park in Ohio along the Cuyahoga River and the Canal off the Towpath. They’re fascinating birds to study.

When you think of birds, the first species that comes to mind may be a cardinal, robin, or hummingbird. But there’s another kind of bird that is just as common in many parts of the United States—the blue heron. These majestic birds are often found near water sources such as rivers and lakes, but they also live in trees. In particular, the Cuyahoga Valley National Park in Ohio is home to a large population of blue herons.

Let’s take a closer look at why blue herons are so popular in this part of the country and why they’re an interesting species to observe.

Blue herons can be found throughout much of North America, but most people associate them with the Cuyahoga Valley National Park in Ohio. This area encompasses 33,000 acres along the Cuyahoga River and features a wide variety of animal life including deer, foxes, beavers and more. The park is also home to several species of migratory birds such as bald eagles and ospreys. But it’s the blue heron that draws visitors from far away because these elegant birds are commonly seen along the banks of the river or perched atop trees near the canal off the Towpath Trail.

Blue herons have unique characteristics that make them interesting to watch. They feed on small fish by wading into shallow waters and spearing their prey with their long bills. They also have sharp eyesight, which helps them locate food even in dark environments such as murky ponds or a fast-moving river. During breeding season (typically March through May), male blue herons will perform elaborate courtship displays by flapping their wings and calling out with shrill cries while females will build nests high up in trees using twigs and grasses collected from nearby areas.

Whether you’re interested in observing wildlife or simply want to take some amazing photos during your next outdoor excursion, keep your eye out for these beautiful creatures! From courtship displays during breeding season to spearing fish for dinner, there’s something special about watching these intelligent birds thrive in their natural habitat.

The Towpath in Cuyahoga Valley National Park is a perfect place to take a walk or get a run in. And it allows for the wonderful photographs like herons down low and up high.
